Ernie Currie, Ruling Elder
Ernie grew up nearby, in West Charlotte, and moved to Denver in 2001. Twenty-seven years ago he married Sandy - the best friend anyone could ever have. He has two grown daughters and three grandchildren. Ernie is a faithful, hard worker evidenced by his 41 years as a past employee of Duke Energy.
Ernie enjoys making friends and being a friend - some of which he does on the golf course. Since retiring 8 years ago, he’s increased and improved his friendships - and his golf game (a little). His favorite bible verse is Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” |
Bruce Hafley, Ruling Elder
Bruce grew up in Raleigh and attended NC State University before moving to Charlotte in 1992. Upon the birth of his first child in 2001 he moved to the quieter town of Denver.
He came to know Jesus in a personal way in his early 30’s and was discipled at several PCA churches in the Charlotte area - some of which he helped plant. Bruce recently married Paige who grew up nearby in Gastonia. Paige brings three children, Thomas, Caroline, and Katherine to join Bruce’s two daughters, Autumn and Rachel, to blend with a few pets for a very active family life. Bruce likes meeting new people and hearing their story, which helps in his job in technical sales. In his free time he enjoys hiking, going to the gym and working on projects around the house. And he gets to share his musical gifts by leading music at the church with the guitar. |
Only Christ is King and Head of the Church!
He is the cornerstone, and the foundation of His Church is made up of the Apostles and Prophets of old (Ephesians 2:20). These offices are extraordinary and unrepeatable, but they are not all the government which Christ has established. In addition, through His inspired Apostles, He directed that the ordinary offices of Elder and Deacon should continue in the life of His Church (Philippians 1:1).
Elders come in two types: Teaching Elders and Ruling Elders. Teaching Elders are commonly called Ministers or Pastors, and they primarily provide for the preaching and teaching need within a local congregation (Ephesians 4:11). Ruling Elders are commonly called simply by the shorthand of Elders, and they shepherd the flock, caring for the congregation, and watching over her spiritual needs (Acts 20:28). Together the Teaching and Ruling Elders make up the Session, which is charged with oversight of the ministry of the Word and prayer in the church. In other words, the elders are called and qualified by God to care for the spiritual needs of the church. At Lakeshore the Session normally meets on the second Wednesday of each month and additionally as needed.
All Elders must be selected by the congregation from those so gifted by Christ (Titus 1:5-9). The Teaching Elder (Pastor) of the Church is elected by the congregation and is approved and installed by the Catawba Valley Presbytery. The Ruling Elders of this church are chosen from qualified male members of the church, elected by the congregation, and ordained and installed by the Session. Elder Emeritus is an honorary status conferred on sitting members of Session at their request, reducing their required workload. The Teaching Elder serves as the Moderator of the Session, and the Session elects its own Clerk and Committees.
